Bryan Martin may be famed for his trailblazing, standard-setting work with Sangiovese, Riesling and Shiraz/Viognier, but it seems his skills extend to Piemontese classics, too. The fruit is sourced from two vineyards (Bit of Heaven and Grove) in Hilltops in Canberra District, a region with which Martin has a particular affinity. The soils vary, but there’s a common thread of granite with seams of windblown clay sediments and a similar elevation of 500-600 metres. The fruit fermented on skins in 10-hectolitre oak cuves for four months. The wine was then pressed back to cask and transferred to foudre for a further 18 months before being bottled in November 2024.

“Ravensworth has never trodden a conventional path with nebbiolo, though this veers a little bit more into that territory. That being said, it has a levity and freshness many miss in pursuing drier red territory – in essence, there’s an early and easy drinkability to this wine. Vibrant, tart red cherry fruitiness, a touch of char, smoked paprika, alpine herbs found in palate and bouquet. Tannins are fine, sleek, a little grainy and choc-powdery but seems to fit the brief here, though I’d love to see them integrate more. Very much pleasure zone stuff.”
