Bryan Martin hasn’t made a Grüner Veltliner since 2019, not for lack of trying. He loves the variety and is certain of its suitability to the Alpine-like conditions in Tumbarumba—it’s just that there aren’t a lot of plantings. In 2023, he secured two small parcels from Coppabella Vineyard and another unnamed site. Coppabella grows some pretty spiffy fruit, contributing to Penfolds Yattarna for years. The fruit was pressed directly to 20-hectolitre Stockinger foudres for fermentation, and the wine matured for two years on lees. According to Bryan, Grüner “seems right at home” in the large, thick-staved wood, showing the beautiful texture and aromatic spice this variety is known for. Bryan tells us it’s perfect with a schnitty!

Reviews

“This has a twist and edge to it, and likeable for it. A little saline character, strong minerality, the enjoyable piquancy of just-so bitter stone fruits, a pleasing lift of white balsamic that feels like ingredient adeptly used for vibrancy in the wine. Right on. Medium weight or so, some chalkiness to texture, a long trail of juiciness and that refreshing bitterness and white balsamic perkiness through the finish. Very good drink.”
92 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
“Deep-straw in colour. Aromas of baked apple, spice, poached stone-fruit, melon skin and a whiff of aldehyde. Textured, mouth-filling and with plenty of grip and presence. Creamy and layered with smart length.”
90 points, Aaron Brasher, The Real Review
