Voyager experienced a cool start to the season, which delayed flowering and slowed early vine growth. Still, by late December the team's organic farming practices had the vineyard well placed for another fine vintage. Healthy canopies kept the grapes cool through summer and preserved the freshness beautifully. Harvest was completed in early April, with the reds showing bright fruit and fine, silky tannins.
This year's blend comprises 86% Cabernet Sauvignon with 11% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot harvested from the gently rolling, gravelly slopes of the estate's coastal vineyards in the Stevens Valley. The fruit was destemmed but not crushed, preserving whole berries, and fermented in a combination of open, static and concrete vessels below 27˚C to maintain aromatics and slow extraction of tannin and colour. Once pressed off skins, the wines matured in French oak (10% new) and concrete tanks for seven months, with final blending in November and bottling in December 2022.
The 2022 Coastal Cabernet shows ripe mulberries, cherries, vanilla and nutmeg dust on the nose, all of which spill onto a bright-fruited, fine-boned palate with milk-chocolate tannins and clean length.
