This charismatic old-vine cuvée is drawn from two plots: Le Chamery in Cheilly-lès-Maranges and Le Clos in Sampigny-lès-Maranges. The mass-selection vines are over 50 years old, and the soils tend towards red clay, shot through with rocky chalk. Alexandre Bachelet notes that these terroirs are reasonably warm, and he sometimes uses some percentage of bunches to balance the depth of fruit.  This wasn’t necessary in 2024 as the fruit was so racy anyway. Again, this is bright and red fruited but with more inky depths.  Terrific value now, this will be even better with a few years in bottle. Super value.

“The 2024 Maranges Vieilles Vignes comes from 40 to 50-year-old vines with a sprinkling of stems. This has a classy nose with blackcurrant, raspberry and briary scents, fine delineation with hints of bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannins, fine acidity and just a pinch of cracked black pepper with a beautifully controlled finish. Classic in style, very delicious and doubtless great value-for-money.”

“Made from three selected plots, while others go into the Bourgogne. A little darker crimson, with a bouquet that reflects the Bourgogne Rouge but with greater density. The additional fruit intensity covers the acidity satisfactorily, with a peppery note to finish. Crunchy cherry skins in with the raspberry. Drink from 2028-2030.”
