Busso bottles two cuvées from his 1.2 hectares of vines in the Albesani Cru. On the western hills above Neive, Albesani is one of the shining stars of Barbaresco. In his Barbaresco MGA, Masnaghetti writes, "the combination of soil, stature and exposure creates one of the greatest vineyards of the Langhe”. Piero Busso’s neighbour, Franco Massolino, who has recently started to work in this vineyard, told us: “From the very first moment this wine began to ferment, we knew we were dealing with a superb expression of Nebbiolo.” The Busso vines were planted between 30 and 70 years ago at 260 metres above sea level on soils of limestone and blue marl with an ideal southwest exposure.

Only bottled in the greatest years, this cuvée is crafted exclusively from vines planted in 1948 by Guido Busso, winemaker Pierguido Busso’s great-grandfather. The vines surrounding the cantina on the steepest section of the Albesani slope are of the Michet selection of Nebbiolo, highly valued for its quality and the concentration of the wine produced. The tiny yields here ferment naturally, and the wine spends up to 60 days on skins. It then ages for 36 months in a 10-hectolitre oak botte, then goes to bottle (unfined and unfiltered) for another year. 2016 produced 1001 bottles.

“Very fine and expressive with lovely red cherries, spice, amazing purity and texture. Concentrated and fine with nice balance and a sense of freshness and finesse. Quite thrilling.”
