The finest sites of Chassagne’s 1er Cru Morgeot (where 20 separate lieux-dits can be bottled) lie in the upper sector, above the main road, on the poorer, white soils. Les Fairendes is one of these sites. Thierry Pillot once told us his grandfather used to say that Les Fairendes (situated just below Les Caillerets) was the finest terroir within Morgeot (Pillot has no holding here so we take his word to be impartial) and for years we encouraged J.F. Germain to put the vineyard name on his label. As of the 2012 vintage he kindly did just that. The wine is, as you might expect, far from your average Morgeot.

Reviews

“The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Fairendes unfurls in the glass with notes of mirabelle plum, clear honey, white flowers and fresh pastry. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and textural, it’s deep and enveloping while remaining mouthwateringly bright and mineral. This is one of the more gourmand wines in the range.” 91-93 points
92 points, William Kelley, The Wine Advocate
“This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction, but the underlying fruit seems ripe. Otherwise there is excellent mid-palate density to the powerful and intense medium weight plus flavors that coat the mouth with sappy dry extract and buffers the firm acid spine shaping the impressively long finish. This isn’t a wine of refinement, though neither is it rustic, but I like the balance and upside development potential.” 90-93 points
