Leroux’s estate Bâtard comes from a brilliantly located 0.16-hectare plot of 40-year-old vines right next to the Hospices de Beaune’s parcel and directly across the road (maybe fifteen metres!) from DRC’s parcel of Le Montrachet. It falls on the Chassagne side of the vineyard, for what it’s worth (which says nothing, to be frank). Leroux gained full control of the vineyard management in 2016. He has recently restored the original stone entrance, so it’s quite easy to find his plot if you’re ever driving along the boundary between Bâtard and Le Montrachet. Again, it’s bottled only in magnum. Alongside Les Genevrières, Bâtard was first to be harvested this year. It is a monumentally good example of this vineyard: rich, layered and long. Nectar of Bâtard, it was raised in one- and two-year-old barrels.

Reviews

“From a tiny parcel (0.3876-acre [0.1569ha]), the first vines Ben bought, in 2009. Exotic melon and ginger. Spicy aromatic on the palate, too. But after this rich cloud of aroma and airy volume, the palate has a core that is tight and fresh. The finish is precise, focused, and intense, with a lingering vibration.”
97-98 points, Sarah Marsh MW, The World of Fine Wine
“This smells of croissants and buttered bread. The palate adds roasted apples and baking spices. There is a big burst of exuberant, refreshing acidity on the back palate that nicely tightens up the full-ish mouthfeel. This is super stylish. Ben bought this in 2009. He says that for the same price, he'd only be able to afford Meursault PC Genevrières today!”
