Jobard’s Charmes is a tiny blend from both Les Charmes-Dessus and the lower Dessous sector, from holdings that total a minuscule 0.24 hectares. Two-thirds of Jobard’s vines are rooted in the higher Charmes-Dessus, which Jobard says “brings a lot of minerality, a lot of freshness, because of all the limestone. We’re very much on rocks.” The fruit from Dessous brings the flesh and stuffing. Vine age varies; the key holding is a parcel directly below Les Perrières that was planted in 1963, although Jobard estimates the average age would work out at around 30 years. Just two barrels were made this year. Without doubt, it is one of the benchmarks of this vineyard and, as we have so little, the less we say about the wine itself, the better!

Reviews

“Classic, cliché beauty for this Charmes nose – what expectation I now have! Porcelein shape and texture – with such strong and so beautifully boned proportions. The finish is a dream – a great wine!”
Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
“Clear pale colour, the bouquet offering full white fruit with a clear-cut edge which follows through in the mouth. Very impressive intensity, this is excellent. Long fleshy finish behind.”
92-95 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
“This wine is a fine example of why this climat is named Charmes. Its high-toned and pretty, floral generosity immediately draws in the nose. The palate adds on loads of citrus peels and some snappy sourdough bread notes. Plus, there is zippy structure and refreshment, too.”
94 points, Christy Canterbury MW, Tim Atkin Burgundy Report
