An exciting cellar-release from Voyager Estate. This wine is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon with 4% Merlot. The Cabernet grapes were hand-harvested from two prestigious sitee: the Estate Old Black and Block 12, planted in '78 and '95 respectively. They were joined by a debut selection of clone 125 Cabernet from Weightman's Block 5. The younger vines from this site bring both energy and elegance. The Merlot comes from Q45-14 clones and although it is only a small percentage, makes a significant impact, bringing lifted aromatics and mid-palette fleshiness.
The season had a consistent and warm summer, leading to excellent tannin ripeness and development. Although yields were low, thanks to a windy spring and early budburst, the grapes were concenrated and perfectly ripe.
The grapes were hand-harvested and de-stemmed to keep a large portion of whole-berries. The voyager team vinified each parcel seperately in open-top fermenters, employing regular but gentle pump-overs and plunges. After ferment completed, the grapes were left to mascerate with the skins for a further 19 days before pressing. The parcels also matured seperately in tight-grained French oak (50% new) for 18 months. After the initial maturation, the parcels were blended, fined and filtered. Bottling was in 2017.
