We tasted this museum release in France this year (2022) and were stunned by its pristine and youthful complexion. 2009 was, in fact, a great year for Verget Chablis: the wines, from memory, had a measure of vivacity and cut that seemed to be lacking in those of many peers. Indeed, Guffens told us he rates 2009 over 2010, the latter, being the more hyped vintage for whites! We shipped the Bougros Grand Cru from 2009. In hindsight we should have taken both.

The lion’s share of this Grand Cru hails from a plot exposed north on very stony, marly and shallow soil. Added to this, 10% of the wine was harvested from the lieu-dit of La Moutonne. A monopole of Long-Depaquit, La Moutonne sits in a natural amphitheatre, mostly within the Vaudésir Grand Cru vineyard, but with a small protrusion into Les Preuses. The vineyard faces predominantly south and, coupled with a steep gradient, has a warmer microclimate than Vaudésir proper. The 2009 was fermented in barrel and aged for seven months in oak before spending a further six months in Verget’s horizontal stainless tanks on fine lees.
