The S.R.H. is sourced from just 12 rows of 45-plus-year-old, low-yielding, clone P58 Chardonnay vines in the Olive Tree Hill vineyard. These vines have roots well embedded in the ancient marine sediments that form the bedrock in this area. They seem to suck the minerality right out of their subsoil and deliver a spine-tingling wash of salinity to support the intense flavour and texture for which this benchmark Chardonnay is well known. The wine is named in recognition of Bannockburn’s founder, Stuart Reginald Hooper.

The 2021 was whole-bunch pressed to tank, wild-fermented in Tronçais oak hogsheads (30% new), then left on lees for 10 months with no stirring and 70% malolactic fermentation.

Reviews

“Medium-depth yellow colour leads into a shyly reserved bouquet which speaks of buttery shortbread, dried citrus peels and butterscotch which is more evident on the palate, where the wine is very intense and even quite powerful, with a long-lasting carry loaded with penetrating lemon/grapefruit flavours. The aftertaste is refreshing and full of energy. A delicious and very impressive chardonnay.”

“Whole-bunch pressed, wild fermentation in French hogsheads (20% new), 11 months on lees, partial mlf. Named in honour of founder, Stuart Hooper, S.R.H. is sourced from the company's best chardonnay block of 12 rows of vines on the Olive Tree Hill vineyard. Superlative Geelong chardonnay! The long, cool '21 season has brought something extra to S.R.H., a multitude of layers of flavour and depth – more than usual – that so impresses. Keeps trim while exploring nectarine, peach, mango skin, baked apple, citrus, honeysuckle with lemon butter and nougat. Good, honest energy throughout. And the taste stays with you a long, long time.”
96 points, Jeni Port, Wine Companion
“Terrifically good. Flavour and line, character and freshness. Yellow stonefruit and cedar, pine/mint and white flowers, a subtle smokiness. The thing that really impresses is the way texture is folded through and, moreso, the way it establishes its power from the outset but still manages to kick into another, more powerful gear through the finish. This is a truly gorgeous wine.”
