This year’s Orange is a blend of Pinot Gris (80%), Sauvignon Blanc (11%), Riesling (7%), Muscat (1%) and Gewürztraminer (1%) from three sustainably farmed vineyards in Waipara. The Porters vineyard provided the Pinot Gris, Muscat, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc, while the Fraher vineyard contributed some Sauvignon Blanc, and the Riesling was sourced from the Three Sisters vineyard (planted on gravel between 2001 and 2004). The parcels were whole-bunch fermented in 1000-litre open top fermenters for 10-21 days, then pressed off and aged in clay amphora and old barrels for eight months. They were bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Reviews

“The 2021 Orange North Canterbury is truly orange in its appearance – the color is somewhere between a glass of Berocca-infused water and palo cortado. Made like a red wine using white grapes (mainly Pinot Gris with a splash of other aromatic varieties), this is predominantly a whole-bunch fermentation. It brings a satisfying midpalate weight, good concentration and structured, lightly tannic grip. An orange wine that’s a joy to drink – and that’s all too rare.”
92 points, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous
“Oh, if only all orange wines were as downright delicious and as beautiful as this. Predominantly pinot gris, with some muscat, riesling and gewurz thrown in for fun, fermented as whole bunches for three weeks and then aged in old barrels and amphoras for six months. Glowing amber colour, bright, juicy spicy citrus aromatics, slippery then gently tannic in the mouth. Wonderful.”
