An amalgamation of three different sites, the intention of TMV Riesling is to reflect the various aspects and mesoclimates that influence the variety in the Tamar Valley. The Three Wishes vineyard in Hillwood, a site Ricky has worked with for many years, is warm and located just a few hundred metres from the river, a half-hour’s drive north of Launceston. Two other sites in Relbia―Chartley Estate and Glen Shian― contribute zesty acid profiles to complement Three Wishes’ lush fruit and lifted aromatics. From five- to 25-year-old vines on various soil types (silty loam, rocky ironstone and black clay), the free-run TMV fruit fermented in tank at cool temperatures. The pressings fermented in seasoned barrels and were carefully dosed back post-fermentation. The breezy Woodlawn site lies on free-draining silty and sandy soils near the river in Swan Bay and consistently delivers vibrantly pure, potent fruit. The combination with the other sites brings together bright aromatics, snappy red fruits, fresh acidity and spicy depth. Ricky picks over multiple passes. The Dijon clones were harvested together, leaving the mystery clone to hang for another week. The Dijon clones see whole bunch ferments, whilst the mystery clone is entirely destemmed. The wine saw 11 months in seasoned French oak to finish things off. The attention to detail with each clone, and customised winemaking means this wine is anything but formulaic or generic. It spent its last four months in tank where it rested before bottling. It shows a great “stony clarity” and “gentle umami” according to Dave Brookes.
