The modern renaissance of Chenin de Brézé (as it was once known), obviously owes a great deal to the Foucault brothers’ Brézé bottling, and more recently to the new generation of growers like Guiberteau. This striking wine comes from two small parcels of mature vines (planted in 1933 and 1952) within the fabled Brézé climat, a terroir that once produced wines equally as revered as those of the greatest vineyards of Burgundy and Bordeaux. One-quarter of the fruit is also drawn from the historic Clos de Carmes terroir.

Brézé is not typical Saumur at all. The vineyards are at a higher elevation than most of the surrounding area and sit directly on a hill of tuffeau—a porous, chalky limestone intermixed with clay and sand. Something like 70% of the vineyard has less than one metre of topsoil so the vines of any age must establish roots in the chalky bedrock. This terroir creates a far more citrus, floral and mineral expression of Chenin. Even in ripe and powerful vintages, the wines remain cool, pure and fresh.

Guiberteau now uses larger-format barrels from different coopers. He has found he prefers Atelier Centre France’s thick-staved demi-muids for this wine (he’s also engaged Clos Rougeard’s local cooper to supply some barrels). It’s a hand-harvested, estate-grown, biodynamic, naturally fermented, low-dosage fizz that shows up many conventional Champagnes for both quality and value. Topping off an impressive package is the marvellous label designed by iconic French illustrator Michel Tolmer (of Mimi, Fifi and Glouglou fame).

Jo Landron is not a fan of using Muscadet’s Melon de Bourgogne for sparkling wine, preferring instead a blend of around 50 to 60% Folle Blanche (grown on sandy clay) with a balance of Pinot Noir (grown on gravelly soils). Vine age ranges from 18 to 30 years. The yields are typically between 50 and 60 hl/ha—far lower than the average yields in Champagne. The base wines ferment naturally and then go through a traditional second fermentation in bottle, where they remain for a minimum of 24 months. The dosage ranges from zero to a low 5 g/L (depending on the bottling). Moreover, the fruit for this cuvée is always from a single vintage (2020 in this case).

This list of attributes sounds like the approach of a top Champagne grower, not a humble Muscadet producer! Made from the Estate’s oldest (apart from Les Mémoires) and lowest-yielding Cabernet Franc vines, perhaps more than any other red, Marginale encapsulates the metamorphoses of Germain’s wines from powerhouse intensity to the profound elegance that today defines the wines of this Estate. Marginale is now raised in large 25-hectolitre foudre (that had to be erected in the Roches Neuves cellars by Franz Stockinger himself) for 12 months before finishing its aging in three-year-old Burgundian barrels, purchased from a grower in Vosne-Romanée. This in turn infers quality, as the local rulers tended to keep the best parcels for themselves. Breil means ‘next to the forest’, indicating the woodland this parcel borders. The Génération Dix-Neuf is sourced from a parcel of 60-plus-year-old vines on Saint-Doulchard marls in the Chambrates and Paradis lieux-dits, southwest of Sancerre. Mellot describes the latter vineyard as the “Musigny of Sancerre”. This site—under one hectare of densely planted old vines with their own full-time vigneron—is cropped at an eye-wateringly low 20 hl/ha.

To the best of our knowledge this is one of only two reds in the Mellot cellars fermented entirely as whole bunches.
