Several years ago, Barney noticed that the vines in this little ironstone buttonhole were producing slightly smaller bunches, yielding wines of greater depth and concentration than the surrounding vineyard. Thus, in 2013 the decision was taken to produce this micro cuvée. The power of the fruit enables a 100% whole-bunch ferment and Terre de Feu remains Garagiste's only Pinot to be made this way. It also spends more time on skins (23 days for the 2018) and is the most powerful and structured Pinot that Garagiste produces.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/7468/3630/files/ecb1e67e-f4f8-ec11-ab3d-024d026f405e_19164-750.png?v=1764135994
quealy-turbul-friulano-2020
Quealy Turbul Friulano 2020

The variety behind some of northeast Italy’s most exciting whites (see Felluga, Schiopetto et al.) Barney has always felt this parcel could result in a superb and unique Chardonnay—in this part of the vineyard, the 24-year-old vines are rooted in brown soils rather than the more common reddish dirt of the area. The parcel also faces slightly east, offering the vines a cooler, more sheltered aspect. There is therefore less vigour than in the rest of the vineyard, and the bunches are a touch smaller. As a result, the fruit from this parcel tends to make a wine that has real power and intensity without forgoing the finesse which we always associate with Barney’s wines.

This is just the third release of Terre Maritime and it has only strengthened Barney’s decision to keep this parcel separate. Barney doesn’t chase malo in his Chardonnay, he doesn’t test for it and his winery doesn’t have a strong malo bug presence. Plus, in 2022 the acidities were ‘spot on’ so there was no need round out the edges. So, there’s a small bit of malo at work here, but just a smidge.

Boy does Flanders do good Chardonnay. The new release is racy, energetic and fine, with intensely concentrated citrus and floral aromas kissed by notes of fennel and rocky minerals. As with the Pinot Noir, there’s a terrific wave of acidity, here dicing the wine’s fleshy, svelte texture with tensile vigour before a stadium finish of citrus-fuelled energy. If this all sounds too to be true for a wine of this price, it isn’t. The Merricks site, Barney’s flagship, contributes bright fruit characters and a signature savoury quality. The Balnarring site, which Barney has farmed for 12 years, adds shade and spice while the more southerly, cool and high-elevation site in Red Hill contributes linearity. The fruit spent 21 days on skins, with gentle pump-overs and a small amount of plunging towards the end. The eight months élevage (on gross lees) was roughly half/half in 300-litre hogsheads and foudre, with just five per cent new oak.
