Due to poor flowering there is no Folium Chardonnay this year, and very little of this wine as well! The Carter Ashmore Vineyard, in Marlborough’s Fairhall sub-region, is situated on an ancient riverbed where the soils are a mixture of layered silt and alluvial gravels deposited over the aeons. This site is farmed organically by Dog Point’s viticulturalists, and is planted to the Mendoza clone of Chardonnay. The vineyard team has worked hard on introducing strong biological competition, and a canopy management regimen that encourages the vines to channel all their energy into the fruit (vis-à-vis the vegetation). The overall approach has given Corofin the ability to harvest fruit that is fully flavour ripe at lower sugar levels. You get the winemaking notes from Mike Patterson below.

Whole bunch pressed slowly over six hours; no additions were made during or post pressing; transferred with a high percentage of solids to one 500 litre oak puncheon and one stainless steel barrel for fermentation; natural fermentation with full malo; remained on original lees in barrel, without stirring or sulphur, until late March 2018; brought together in stainless steel before bottling without fining and filtration.

This is stunning Chardonnay. It strikes a fine balance between generosity, with layers of ripe, Golden Delicious, nectarine fruit and gently nutty lees characters and both purity and freshness. The grapes were hand-harvested into small bins and indigenous yeast fermentation occurred in tank. —an even rarer approach! It’s a magnificent, sweeping site, divided into a large number of sub-plots and nurtured meticulously (and organically) by Ben Cowley. Corofin’s fruit comes from the main slopes, planted at a density of 3,800 vines per hectare on clay-rich soils. 2015 was the first year that Mike Paterson worked exclusively with the vineyard’s 20-year-old Abel vines—otherwise known as the ‘Gumboot clone’ for the way it made its way to New Zealand. The Abel fruit is prized for its natural acidity, tannins and extract. Largely, for this reason, the Cowley delivers a deeper and darker expression of Pinot than Settlement. That said, all of Paterson’s 2017 Pinots capture a good measure of silky charm and floral lift and this wine is no different. Expect a bright, floral wine with plenty of jubey, red currant and wild strawberry fruit as well as a wonderfully cool, sappy freshness and plenty of fine tannins running the length of the palate. There’s also some subtle smoked meat and earthy complexity that might give a clue to the wine’s future development. Managed organically (Bio Gro), it’s the most inland and southern site that Corofin source from. Therefore, it’s the most extreme with a high diurnal range. It’s often picked some ten days after Cowley. Another point of differentiation is the soil here—this parcel has plenty of gravel running through the clay. Over the past three seasons, Marlborough—particularly its organic vineyards—has experienced significant troubles with powdery mildew. In 2020 Takaki Okada’s Folium Vineyard succumbed to this pesky pathogen, and the resulting yields would not allow for a Corofin release this year. In Folium’s place, Paterson turned to his friend Ben Glover, whose organic Brawn Vineyard in Dillon’s Point had been impressing for several years.

Sitting in the lee of the Wither Hills to the southeast of the Wairau Valley floor, the Brawn Vineyard lies on Kaiapoi silt loam over pea gravel, closer the ocean than Corofin’s other sites. It’s home to an old-vine Mendoza clone that is now rare in Marlborough, “most of the old blocks have been ripped out and replaced with Sauvignon”, sighs Paterson. It’s the thick skins of this old-vine fruit that Paterson credits with his wine’s succulent extract and spice tones. In addition, both Glover and Paterson have identified a unique saline/umami note to the Chardonnay from this site (and both reviewers seem to pick this up on this signature in their notes below).

Given the quality of this first release, we were not surprised to hear that Paterson hopes to make Brawn a full-time member of the Corofin family. Since 2011, this beautiful site has been owned and organically tended by viticultural purist Takaki Okada, who lives in a little house in the middle of his vines. The dirt here is Southern Valley clay, around 1.5 metres deep on top of gravelly silt. These soils retain sufficient moisture during the dry summers to balance growth without the need for irrigation. Corofin only gets to work with five rows (1,200 vines).

Mike explains that the Chardonnay from this dry-grown site delivers the holy trinity of “ripeness, precision and harmony”, reflecting Takaki’s sensitive farming practices and the vineyard’s ungrafted, deep-rooted vines. The fruit was picked a few days later than Wrekin on 26th March, and winemaking was similar. It was pressed as bunches, with only the soft pressings used. Fermentation, malolactic conversion and maturation occurred in seasoned puncheons and barriques for 12 months. It then spent another eight months in tank before bottling without fining or filtration.
