The vineyard grows Moscato Bianco especially for Quealy. The fruit was harvested before dawn, arriving cool and ready to press at the winery only minutes away. The 2021 is 100% Moscato Bianco, picked at 10.5 Baumé to preserve perfume and acidity. The grapes were gently pressed to a low yield, gifting filigree aromas and a nimble palate weight. The juice was settled, then racked to begin ferment. The wine was then tiraged and immediately bottled for secondary fermentation. Disgorgement was by hand and the wine was made without any sulphur or dosage. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"richp\"\u003eBrimming with character, it fizzes with expressive aromatics of white florals, chamomile and teacake spice. A skinsy textural intensity bolsters a clean, fresh and robust palate weight, and then there’s plenty of depth, focused by pristine freshness. Located on the coastal plain, it sits just 30 metres above sea level behind Balnarring village. It’s an exposed, north-facing site with alluvial clay and red soils washed down from Red Hill. Tom McCarthy tells us it produces “gorgeous, small bunches of glossy Pinot Noir”. Stylistically, the Campbell \u0026amp; Christine sits at the more concentrated, muscular end of the Pinot spectrum. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLow yields in 2022 further ramped up the impactful fruit from this site, so Tom approached it with a gentle hand in the cellar. Different clones were picked over two days—9th and 16th March. Macleod’s sloping, south-facing Chardonnay block sits on the classic well-drained, red ferrosol of South Gippsland. This parcel was first to gain organic certification in 2008, the vines are dry-grown and yields—which might easily blow out in the fertile Leongatha soils—are strictly controlled, averaging a bizarrely low (given the pricing) 1.5 tonnes per acre. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the shed, the guiding principle for Mark Matthews is to have confidence in the fruit and allow it to sit at the heart of all decision-making. Consequently, his pared-back winemaking regime, encompassing wild ferments and only neutral oak, is designed to deliver his subtle message with as much integrity as possible. This year, 5% of the fruit was fermented on skins to add texture and phenolic tension to the blend, while the balance was pressed as whole bunches. The wine was divided between concrete vessels with no malolactic conversion, and 15+-year-old barriques with partial malolactic conversion. Both batches rested on lees with no stirring for nine months. With a touch more grip than last year, this is another terrific value from one of Victoria’s most green-fingered growers. He and Luke are on the same page when it comes to farming practices, and the site is managed sustainably. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe clone of Shiraz planted on the site proved a drawcard for Luke. Unlike the lion’s share of Shiraz vines in the Yarra Valley, which are PT23 clone, the Martingale vineyard is planted to Tahbilk, a clone Luke worked with at the Tibooburra vineyard. It’s a clone that gives bunches with small round berries and rich wines with more body and mass than PT23. You can expect a delicious uptick in spice, structure and savoury nuance from 2023.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs always, Luke takes a no-frills approach in the cellar. The fruit was destemmed, and spontaneous fermentation occurred in an old 5,000-litre oak cask before being bottled without fining or filtration. The results are super impressive: it’s a high-toned, captivating, layered Shiraz, svelte and silky in weight with deep dark fruits mingled with spicy pepper notes and earthy complexity. The fruit was partially destemmed and fermented as whole berries, with a small portion of whole bunches included (10%). Ray and Maree work closely with the Johns each year and are intimately involved in the decisions for their chosen blocks (they work with the same blocks and take 100% of the fruit) to ensure yields are kept low and the fruit is picked at optimal ripeness.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe 2019 release saw a long, cool fermentation on skins and extended maceration for 40 days (a total of 60 days on skins). Ray Nadeson is an avid proponent of the practice, leaving a lick of sugar in all his Riesling wines: “It’s essential for the texture of the wine”. He’s a dab hand at it too. The 2023 leaps from the glass with lime leaf and white florals, paving the way for fleshy, fruity citrus weight shot through with long, racy lines and lip-smacking, moreish texture. Perfumed, spicy and bright-fruited with deep structure, gliding weight and snappy grip, this is as complete and composed as you could wish for. Luke has often told us that Denton’s granitic character can be seen most acutely in Chardonnay, and all that mineral tension, stone fruit and river stone flavour screams through in this cracking vintage. It’s one of the most pristine, focused Lambert Chardonnays we have tasted. This position helps preserve the high levels of natural acidity critical to maintaining balance from a site famed for powerful flavour. The soils are shallow and rocky, with more white clay than lower down, which Kaspar Hermann credits with the wine’s sculpted, chalky personality. Yields are always low, rarely providing more than seven or eight barrels, and in this poor flowering year, Hermann had enough for just five. The 19-year-old vines are Gingin clone and produce thick-skinned, full-throated fruit with plenty of spicy nuance and phenolic structure. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eF Block Chardonnay is Hermann’s favourite wine to make; he even prunes the block himself. Pressed as whole bunches to oak (20%) for fermentation with full solids, the wine underwent partial malolactic conversion (60%) and matured for nine months on lees in barrel before bottling. Once again, Hermann has struck an exciting balance between depth, texture and finesse. It’s a wonderfully aromatic Chardonnay, evoking floral-accented stone fruits, wispy reduction and a warming spice mix. The palate is fleshy and powerfully structured with a seam of salty minerals and citrus zest on the long, coiled, chalky finish. Although this sub-region can produce some of Heathcote’s most refined wines, it is still an area that lends itself to growing powerful Syrah, so it gets an additional year in cask. The 2021 spent its first year in a range of Stockinger cask and concrete tank before being blended to one 2,000-litre Stockinger cask for the remainder of its maturation. It was bottled at the end of November 2023 after 33 months’ aging. It is a gorgeous, dark-fruited expression of this famous region. At 13% alcohol, it is in no way heavy and, in fact, is quite the “refreshing” contrast to many wines released from the area.
