The first two are Gamay de Bouze and Gamay de Chaudenay. Thought to be introduced by the Benedictine monks, these old variants are now almost extinct outside the Monts du Forez. There’s also a little Gamaret, a cross between Gamay Noir and Reichensteiner created in Switzerland in 1970 (which may not easily fit the heirloom narrative of this wine, but it’s a grape Bonnefoy prizes for its vibrant black fruit character). These red-fleshed varieties are outlawed within the Côtes du Forez appellation, so this (delicious) wine is bottled under the IGP d'Urfé.

The soils here are Migmatite granite, a mix of metamorphic and igneous rock that forms the signature soil type of the region of Montbrison. As this is a young vine cuvée, Bonnefoy does not use any stems in the winemaking, and the wine is simply wild fermented and raised in cuve inox. Les Rougeots du Clos is vinifed without any added sulphur—Bonnefoy notes that the teinturier variants are less prone to oxidation and instead uses a little natural gas for protection. Again, you can pick this straight off the ‘vibrant, perfumed and crunchy shelf’. It’s aromatic and finely succulent with red current juiciness kissed by white peppercorn, hibiscus and elderberry notes with a thirst-quenching finish. Gilles Bonnefoy was so impressed with the quality of the grape’s small, thick-skinned berries that he took mass-selection vines from Mémoire to plant his next vineyard. These sites produce the most direct, accessible expression of Pouilly-Fumé. Under Louis-Benjamin's guidance, its quality has improved dramatically, now rivalling his other wines. Silex is the ultimate Dagueneau wine in many ways: super-mineral, pure, crystalline and typically very long-lived. Silex means flint, and this wine is produced only from the flint-rich soils on the north-facing slopes of the hill of Saint-Andelain. The vines mostly range between 35 and 65 years old, and yields are kept lower than in most other vineyards. Silex ferments and ages in Dagueneau’s famed cigar-shaped barrels and other casks, and a portion now matures in 220-litre Wineglobe—neutral glass vessels that avoid reduction and allow for lower SO2 levels. Because of the soil type and the concentration of the mature vines, this wine is always intense and often austere when young, typically requiring several years (between five and 10) to truly express itself. The 2023 is a little more open, yet it’s still tightly coiled and incredibly complex with all kinds of citrus, nectarine, sage and sea-spray. Clearly built for aging, it nonetheless makes for wonderful drinking now, especially if given a good decant.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/7468/3630/files/3506ed2f-4f5e-f111-ad59-0a314af85f99_26262-750_..png?v=1780385028
domaine-didier-dagueneau-vin-de-france-clos-du-calvaire-2022
Domaine Didier Dagueneau Vin De France Clos du Calvaire 2022
Only three bottles shipped and only the third time we have had an allocation in over 20 years! Obviously something very rare and special, this unicorn comes from a unique, walled vineyard, Clos du Calvaire, on the top of the Saint-Andelain hill. It's a tiny 0.2-hectare vineyard that Didier Dagueneau planted in the ’90s. It was always expected to become a top vineyard due to its ideal location and densely planted, ungrafted vines; and indeed, it produced some incredibly powerful, structured wines. However, the vines struggled, especially in warmer years, forcing a rethink and, eventually a replant. Following the 2008 vintage, Louis-Benjamin removed the vines, leaving the land fallow for three years, before replanting in 2011 at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare and in a north-south direction. The tiny allocations and the price (both here and online!) tell you everything you need to know. Deep, chiselled and something very, very special.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/7468/3630/files/9581b494-4f5e-f111-ad59-0ac0955cf5ff_26265-750_..png?v=1780385037
