Leroux’s 0.4-hectare, old-vine parcel (planted in 1955) produces small, concentrated clusters. This brings genuine depth of fruit to go with the intense, earthy minerality. It’s a wine that lives up to its baby-Grand-Cru reputation—deep and rich yet with an intense mineral backbone. This magnificent wine aged in two second-use barrels.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/7468/3630/files/d3a3da37-178a-f011-ac46-0a5a9202f90d_25255-750.png?v=1773885905
benjamin-leroux-grand-cru-corton-les-grandes-lolieres-2023
Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Corton Les Grandes Lolières 2023

Being introduced to this wine at chez Leroux was a wonderful surprise. Note that this Grand Cru is not Corton-Charlemagne but rather Corton Blanc, another appellation on the Corton Hill for certain rare plots outside of Corton-Charlemagne. It’s a rarely seen appellation! In 2018, only 4.18 hectares were declared. Suffice to say many experienced Burgundy lovers have never tasted one. Leroux previously sourced Pinot from Les Grandes Lolières, but this is his first white. Downslope from Corton Le Rognet, the vineyard sits close to the village of Ladoix-Serrigny and faces due east where the soil below is very chalky—a real Chardonnay terroir.

This is an absolutely riveting white Burgundy with great energy, depth of fruit, punchy freshness and a long, earthy close. A portion of the wine was made in WineGlobes for extra precision and purity. The result is impressive. Leroux picked on September 3rd, at least a week before the proprietor picked his fruit. The vineyard has since been pulled out by the owner for replanting so this brilliant wine is now historic as well!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/7468/3630/files/f94d7418-0a8a-f011-ac46-02954333b573_25256-750.png?v=1773885901
benjamin-leroux-grand-cru-corton-charlemagne-2023
Benjamin Leroux Grand Cru Corton-Charlemagne 2023

Again, this year’s rendition comes entirely from Les Languettes, a cool site in Aloxe-Corton, wedged between Les Pougets and Le Corton. Positioned directly below the woods, Leroux favours this site for its intense, cool expression of white-soil minerality. The only downside is the loss of fruit from wild boars and rabbits that emerge from the forest! The grapes are pressed gently without crushing, lightly settled, and fermented without sulphur in a mix of small and large casks. Leroux uses one-third new oak and the result is a superb, powerful Charlemagne.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/7468/3630/files/59887fba-0a8a-f011-ac46-02954333b573_25257-750.png?v=1773885896
