Xavier Ausàs left Vega in 2015 to concentrate on setting up his own, Burgundian-sized family Domaine. The following year (to much acclaim) Ausàs launched his first vintage of Interpretación. The building blocks are a number old-vine, high-grown Tinto Fino parcels concentrated around Ribera’s central belt.

While much of Ribera is bewitched by new barrels, Ausàs is notable for his refined use of oak. Ausàs believes muscle in Ribera del Duero is a given, but searches for the elusive combination of both strength and elegance.

Xavier Ausàs describes 2019 as a Mediterranean vintage, compared to the cooler Atlantic season of 2018. The nose is deep and layered with waves of red and dark fruits complemented by baking spices, floral notes and subtle oak. The impressive detail continues on the palate where complex and fulsome flavour is supported by plush tannins, fresh natural acidity and incredible length. The aging potential is clearly evident, but there is also a great deal of immediate drinking pleasure to be found with a good decant (and, perhaps, a dry-aged rib eye with pepper sauce). Another very impressive release.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0620/7468/3630/products/ea88b1c3-7117-ed11-ab3d-0ac90280dbea_20876-750.png?v=1660281540
ausas-ribera-del-duero-interpretacion-2020
Ausàs Ribera del Duero Interpretación 2020

Interpretación has been and will remain 100% Tempranillo (or Tinto Fino, as it is known in Ribera) sourced from some of Xavier Ausàs’s favourite villages in the region. Moradillo de Roa—Ausàs’s highest source at 950 metres—brings power, freshness and structure, while the white blanqueros soils of Roa de Duero provide “a chalky sensation in the mouth and minerality”, says Xavier. Gumiel del Mercado, with its clay soils, delivers fruit generosity and acidity, and the stony terroir of Nava de Roa at 700 metres brings elegance and blue flowers. Xavier purchased this last site in 2020, and it now makes up 40% of the blend.
While much of Ribera is still bewitched by new barrels, Ausàs is notable for its refined use of oak. The wine ages for 14 months in French oak (just 30% new) in two sizes: half in 225-litre casks and half in 500-litre demi-muids.
