L'Hêtre Has Landed

Now in Stock: Two Exquisite Wines from the ‘First Family’ of Bordeaux’s Right Bank
L'Hêtre Has Landed

“You hardly need me to tell you that this is one to watch.”  Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux

From the Thienpont family (of Le Pin fame) comes this wonderful value from the stunning Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux. Acquired by the Thienponts in 2015, L'Hêtre is an organically-farmed 27-hectare estate east of Saint-Émilion, and is planted to 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The wines are fermented naturally in concrete vats and aged in French oak of various formats. With winemaking now in the hands of the highly regarded Antoine Mariau, the wines are extremely smart and are only getting better and better as the Thienpont family and Mariau learn more about this extraordinarily pretty place. The wines already showcase the very best of Castillon: intense, expressive and pure, with the structure to age and the accessibility to drink young.

The wine labels feature illustrations directly inspired by the estate's name (L'Hêtre meaning "beech" in French), in keeping with the arboreal theme of the Thienpont's properties (Le Pin meaning "pine" and L'If meaning "yew").

We are delighted to introduce these wines to the Bibendum portfolio. At these price points, the esteemed Thienpont name has never been more accessible.

L’Hêtre Côtes de Bordeaux 2023

L’Hêtre Côtes de Bordeaux 2023

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the flagship L'Hêtre is a wine of real class and energy. Aromatic and floral on the nose, it's autumnal dark red fruit builds on the palate in layers with crisp mineral focus and beautifully detailed tannins singing through the finish. Ready to drink now, it will no doubt reward time in the cellar.

“So aromatic and floral on the nose. Glossy, this has a great brightness and focus to it. Clean and pure, lovely finesse and direction. It’s a little tight and straight but there’s wonderful detail to the tannins and fruit - a mix of blackcurrants and raspberries. Crisp but also comforting. Layered and complex. Really stands out and one to look out for.”
94 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter
“The 2023 L'Hêtre is a powerful, driving wine from Jacques Thienpont and Fiona Morrison MW's Côtes de Castillon property. A burst of dark red cherry fruit, blood orange, cinnamon and pomegranate all flesh out in the glass. This heady Côtes de Castillon packs a pretty serious punch. I would give it a year or two in the cellar.”

La Raison d’Hêtre Côtes de Bordeaux 2023

La Raison d’Hêtre Côtes de Bordeaux 2023

This is a very approachable blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc. It's a deeply coloured, medium-bodied red with a smoky, fruit-forward nose of dark berries, bramble, and spice, underscored by a subtle chalky minerality. Smooth and well-balanced on the palate, with gentle tannins, harmonious fruit-oak integration and a savoury, lingering finish that reflects the limestone-and-woodland terroir of Castillon.

“Lovely fragrance on the nose, the Cabernet Franc leaping out of the glass. Silky smooth, this has a nice combination of bright acidity and pure fruit. Lots of spiced edges and some herbal notes come through - thyme, mint and crushed stones. Easy, crisp, juicy, still with a bit of flesh. Very drinkable. First year of organic certification.”
91 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter
“The 2023 La Raison d'Hêtre has a pure and perfumed bouquet with brambly red cherry and white-tipped strawberry fruit. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a keen line of acidity, with gentle grip toward the finish. This is a classy second wine from the Côtes de Castillon estate.”
