The Marlborough phenomenon has taken the wine-drinking world by storm with its pungent, unmistakable Sauvignon. As production now runs high, the best producers are looking to deliver wines that remain faithful to the distinctive regional style, but offer more in terms of texture and complexity – often also restraint. The most interesting development in the last five years has been that of Pinot Noir, with soil and topography driving depth and differentiation with an overall air of brightly-fruited approachability and crisp acid crunch.
