Vissoux Brouilly Pierreux 2010 (375ml)
Stelvin. Martine Chermette's grandmother was born and grew up in the vines at Pierreux. As Martine puts it, "For sentimental reasons [we] couldn't resist buying this little plot of vines at the foot of Mont Brouilly." Pierreux is 1.5 hectares of Gamay at the foot of the Mont Brouilly on granite scree with blue stone. The name Pierreux certainly comes from the word "pierres" (stones), illustrating the make-up of the soil. Vine age here is 60 years. This is always a masculine, mineral cuvee in the early years. While the 2009 was brooding and dark this is more refined. It's still really spicy, inky and wonderfully aromatic. There are lots of small crushed red raspberry notes along with a pungent crushed stone minerality that locals attribute to the volcanic blue 'andesite' stones. Oodles of juicy, crisp edged fruit are framed by elegant, powdery tannins taking the wine to a long glowing finish.
