Ponsot Clos des Monts Luisants

Having now enjoyed a number of vintages of this atypical white Burgundy I can declare myself an enormous fan. Recently I secured a couple of older vintages that have been nothing short of mind blowing. Of course, as this is 100% Aligoté (yes, Aligoté) and a white Burgundy from Morey, it is by definition very special. In fact it is unique, as it is both a monopole and the only Cote de Nuits 1er cru that is only from this variety. Previously there was some Chardonnay and some Pinot Blanc in the blend yet from 2006 it is solely Aligoté. But this is not just any old Aligoté: it is an ancient clone planted in 1911. And it is from a limestone rich site that, according to Laurent Ponsot, has always made better whites from this grape than from Chardonnay. Ironically, again according to Ponsot, this wine is often picked as a white Burgundy made from Chardonnay in blind tastings. This, then, is a great blind wine for your next wine lunch or dinner! It is a wine of incredible, power, depth, complexity, texture and longevity so those who say to themselves; “Why would I pay this much money for Aligoté?” will be depriving themselves of one of Burgundy’s most remarkable whites.
