Below we offer the wonderful value 2009 white burgundies from the enfant-terrible Jean-Marie Guffens (Verget & Domaine Guffens-Heynen). As always, we will present two offers from this talented producer (this being the first) as Guffens releases his wines in two tranches based on bottling dates.

For those of you new to Verget and winemaker Jean-Marie Guffens, it’s not stretching the bow too tight to say that Guffens has redefined what is possible with Chardonnay in the Mâcon and Chablis. He has done this by bringing a perfectionist approach to all levels of viticulture and winemaking in order to reveal a purity and depth that was previously a pipedream, at least in the Mâcon.

Guffens is also perhaps the most self critical winemaker in Burgundy. He seems to delight in talking down his wines and the vintage in general. Anyway, we have learnt to temper Guffens’ entertaining, often insightful and always extreme statements about a given vintage.
