Mac Forbes Gruner Veltliner 2009
Mac's Grüner is one of the most delicious examples we have tasted. Blended in two parts, one barrel fermented in large old oak, the other a wild ferment in tank at 11 degrees, the result is a bright and personality rich wine with texture, complexity and refreshment to the fore. The supple, textured palate offers crunchy, ripe apple, nettle, yellow plum and sweet herbs with notable balance and food friendly personality, finishing with a saline twist and spicy freshness. It's radiant, juicy, mouth-watering stuff and brilliant for the money.
"Yarra Valley winemaker Mac Forbes has been dabbling in Austrian wine since 2004 and this is his resultant gruner veltliner. It's grown in the Carnuntum region, 40 kilometres south-west of Vienna. Easy to imagine why he likes the gig so much. If you had to categorise it you'd say that it's a wine of texture more than anything else. This is rarely a bad category to sit in. It has elements of spice and citrus peel, brine, wax, and smoke. It doesn't disappoint on any level. Length, texture, interest. Nice all over." 92 Points, Campbell Mattinson, www.winefront.com.au.
