Eden Road The Long Road RHE Viognier 2009

Inspired by the whites of the Rhone Valley (hence RHE). The fruit for the 2009 RHE is Canberra district Viognier, of which a small component was fermented in old French barrels. There is a lovely mix of ginger, apricot pith, bergamot and charcuterie on the nose. The palate is as much about textural balance as fruit power, and the wine is all the better for this. Racy with a touch of slate to close. Offers an elegance that is a rarity in an Australian Viognier. "Light, green-tinged yellow. Extremely fresh, mineral-accented aromas of lime, candied lemon, chalk and white flowers; I'd have picked this blind as riesling. Dusty, nervy citrus and underripe orchard fruit flavors are bracingly bitter, with a sneaky note of white pepper emerging with air. A very grown-up style of viognier that finishes with impressive clarity and energy. Nothing exotic here, and it weighs in at a shockingly low (for the variety) 12.2% alcohol." 90 points, Josh Raynolds - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 2010
"No, that's not a typo. RHE is a Rhône-inspired white, realised entirely with viognier in 2009, showing superbly attractive ripe apricot and peach, banana, some bright musky perfume and sweet, sweet florals. In the mouth, it's every bit as luscious and textured as the nose suggests, showing orange citrus, nectarine and apricot flavour in bright, juicy stride. Impressive length to boot." 93 points, Nick Stock, The Age/SMH Good Wine Guide 2011
