Dureuil-Janthial Rully 1er Cru Champs Cloux Rouge 2009
Although small by general standards, the Champ Cloux 1er Cru - at 4.62ha - is one of Rully's largest. Its soils are rich in clay although the red wines from here are never as tannic as neighbouring Givry or Mercurey. Instead we have a very pretty, aromatic Pinot characterised by wild strawberry and red liquorice aromas, plus a suggestion of brown spice. Juicy, fresh and pure in the mouth, it is nevertheless firmly built, with violet tinged red fruit draped over a fine frame of powdery tannins and crunchy cherry-accented acidity. Lovely stuff and another 1er Cru bargain. Only a paltry 12 cases for Australia.
"A leaner, more backward wine, very distinctive and characterful, mineral notes, and a big, powerful finish. Drink 2012-9." 17 points, Decanter.com
