DOMAINE WEINBACH

KAYSERSBERG, ALSACE

Producteur de vins de qualité exceptionnelle. La Review de Vins de France 2009
[The highest rating granted to only three producers in Alsace]

What the critics are saying:

“Laurence Faller vinifies her wines without shortcuts, with a purity and precision such that their quality is evident to all, like all the greatest wines.”
Michel Bettane & Thierry Dessauve, Le Grand Guide des Vins de France 2009

“[Laurence Faller] is one of the best winemakers in the world. She manages to capture the tiniest detail in her wines and they shine through their style, their precision of fruit, their elegance of texture and their amazing balance – they are faultless.”
Olivier Poussier, Revue de Vins de France

Rieslings from the Legendary Schlossberg Grand Cru vineyard and possibly the finest Gewürztraminer in all of Alsace.

One of France’s most distinguished wine Estates is also one of its most enjoyable and entertaining. You can already tell by the comments above (from the two leading French wine guides), Weinbach is universally regarded as one of the greatest producers of Alsace and therefore by proxy, one of the greatest ‘aromatic’ Domaine’s in the world. Yet it is a Domaine that remains incredibly grounded, refreshingly free from overarching self importance and pomposity. As Margaret Rand notes in The World of Fine Wine: “Tasting at Domaine Weinbach is the most fun you can have with a glass of wine.”

With long time matriarch Colette now taking a back seat, Domaine Weinbach is today run by the welcoming yet hard grafting Faller sisters; Catherine and Laurence. They have 27 hectares of vineyards, predominantly Grand Cru. The most famous is the majestic granite outcrop of the Schlossberg hill, closely followed by the walled Clos de Capuchin; a Weinbach fiefdom that lies in front of the house and its cellars. The Fallers have farmed organically for some time; however, in the late 1990’s they began the conversion towards biodynamics, a move which was complete in time for the 2005 vintage.

“These are extreme wines – not in the sense that the description is usually employed, to denote huge concentration, overripeness, or high alcohol levels, as one might find in Zind Humbrecht, but extreme in their minerality and wineyness. There are no other Alsace wines like them.”
Margaret Rand, The World of Fine Wine, Issue 17

.
Regarding sweetness: all Weinbach Rieslings are dry except for the L’inedit and of course the Vendage Tardives and SGN wines (these latter categories are in the “Late Harvest” section below). Of the other wines, the remarkable Gewurztraminers and the Pinot Gris often will have some residual however the acid balance in these wines renders the finish dry. This allows the wines to be paired with many dishes and shouldn’t scare you away from using them earlier in a meal.
