The widespread reporting that followed Noël Pinguet’s departure from Huet in 2012 reflects the long shadows cast by this “mythic” Vouvray estate. What wasn’t so widely publicised was that Huet already had the perfect replacement on hand; Jean-Bernard Berthomé, Huet’s distinguished and longstanding vineyard and cellar manager (or chef de culture) and a colleague of Pinguet for some thirty years (he actually started at the Domaine in 1971!). Berthomé can also count on the talents of Benjamin Joliveau, a fellow Vouvrillon bought in and mentored by Pinguet. The guy who grows the grapes and the young protégé—as far as succession goes, it doesn’t get much smoother.
