Josh Raynolds: [Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Sept/Oct 07] 88 points, excellent:"Ruby-red. Jammy blueberry and boysenberry aromas are complicated
by cinnamon and exotic apricot and maple qualities. Silky, impressively
sweet dark berry flavors display good depth and thrust. Finishes
seamless and sweet, with very good length. Remarkably easy to drink."
Our notes:
We were the first to ship this great value red to Australia. Past vintages have been hailed as “World’s Best Red Wine Buy” and similar acclaim. Hailing from Spain's most arid wine district with a scant 8 inches of rain per year, the vineyards are located at extreme elevation on sparsely vegetated, rocky soils. A lifelong Jumilla wine trade personality, Agapito Rico began developing his own vineyards in the area in the early 1980's, following detailed climate and soil studies. Complementing existing old-vine Monastrell (Mourvèdre) are more recent plantings of Merlot, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Agapito revolutionised Jumilla with his fresh, concentrated young Carchelo reds beginning with the 1993 vintage.
