Bernard Baudry Les Granges Chinon 2010
100% Cabernet Franc. This is always the first Baudry wine released each year. It comes from young vines (12-15+ years old) planted on alluvial soil and gravel on the terraces near the Vienne river. The grapes are picked by hand as late as possible. Fermentation is at cool temperatures in a mix of concrete and large wooden vats with the aim being to produce a racy, fruity wine with less extraction than the other cuvées. Les Granges is meant to be consumed in its youth. This 2010 is a superb example (as you might expect from this great vintage): a crisp, juicy Chinon with a supple, fruity palate. Bright and buoyant on the palate, this shows plenty of stuffing through the finish, with dark tobacco and juicy blackberry notes, all offset by a brisk, chalk edge.
