The Bachelets make wines that are classically styled, emphasizing the inherent freshness, complexity and minerality in each cuvée... This is a new producer to follow." Stephen Tanzer, White Burgundy Issue, Sept/Oct 2007
It is extremely rare that an excellent source of Puligny-Montrachet appears on the scene, but that is what happened when Marc and Alexandre Bachelet formed Domaine Bachelet Monnot in 2005. Since the release of their first set of wines a few years ago, the Bachelet brothers name has been increasingly on the lips of friends of ours in Burgundy whose opinion we hold in high regard. Suitably motivated, we recently made a visit to their Domaine in the unattractively named but stunningly beautiful commune of Dezize-lès-Maranges (at the southernmost tip of the Côte de Beaune).
A tasting through the range quickly showed two things, firstly; the sheer quality of the sites that the brothers work with - 10 hectares in all including Puligny village, Puligny 1er cru and Bâtard Montrachet, along with some superb sites in Maranges and nearby Santenay. Secondly, the precision and detail of the wines: these are wines that offer purity of fruit expression above all else. The brothers are clearly very talented, precise wine growers and their knowledge of the terroirs with which they work is equally impressive. To cut a long story short, we were blown away with what we tasted in the cellar and did not hesitate in adding this producer to our portfolio. Our first shipment of Bachelet Monnot, the 2008s, has arrived and we are proud to offer them here for the first time.
Not only is the quality of the wines impressive, but the prices are fair as well. All the wines below from this exciting new producer can be bought with total confidence. Sadly we have very limited quantities, in particular of the Puligny wines. Hopefully we will get more with subsequent vintages.
