Our latest shipment of Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre has just landed. In terms of purity, precision and mineral complexity, few Sancerre Domaines can rival the wines of this remarkable Domaine.  For this reason Mellot is today the highest rated Sancerre producer in the leading French wine guide, Les Meilleurs Vins de France (La Revue du Vin de France), and their wines are revered by both French critics and collectors. Last year we wrote that “...if anyone doubted Sauvignon Blanc’s place in the pantheon of Noble White Grapes (and many do), a walk through Alphonse Mellot’s famed La Moussière vineyard or a taste of any bottle of Mellot Sancerre should set matters straight.”  In short, the outstanding wines of this Domaine still sit at the AOC’s vanguard. Outside of the hamlet of Chavignol, we are yet to find a producer whose wines can rival them for pungent minerality, limpid freshness and clarity. They have as much in common with great (truly great) Chablis as they do Sauvignon Blanc. This is not that surprising given that the vines of both of these regions are planted in similarly rocky, Kimmeridgian soils.
